Rupture Arts & Books, a recently opened bookstore and cultural space near San Stae in Venice’s Santa Croce district, defies easy categorization. Combining books, art, music, magazines, and cultural programming, it presents a fluid, interdisciplinary vision of contemporary culture that transcends traditional boundaries between disciplines and audiences. More than a bookstore, it functions as an experimental hub where different forms of creative expression enrich one another, fostering dialogue and discovery. The project originated in Paris, founded by Alexandre Sap and Anne-Marie Gaultier, with the ambition of building a network of cultural spaces linked by a shared commitment to exchange and experimentation. From the outset, Rupture was conceived not only as a bookselling venture but also as a platform connecting ideas, artistic disciplines, and cities. This vision led to expansion across the Mediterranean, a region historically shaped by encounters between cultures, languages, and traditions.
Among its key developments was the revitalization of Marseille’s historic Imbernon bookstore, long known for its focus on architecture and urbanism. Under the Rupture model, the space evolved into a multidisciplinary cultural centre hosting exhibitions, events, discussions, and literary activities. A further chapter opened in Tangier, where the project became part of the renowned Librairie des Colonnes, reinforcing the network’s commitment to culturally vibrant port cities and cross-cultural exchange. Venice represents the latest and perhaps most symbolic destination in this Mediterranean constellation. Despite the challenges associated with establishing ambitious cultural spaces in the city, Rupture has found a natural home in a place historically defined by openness, trade, and the circulation of ideas. Rather than existing apart from everyday urban life, the bookstore seeks to integrate itself into the cultural fabric of the city, embracing the many languages, communities, and artistic influences that converge there. In a contemporary Venice increasingly shaped by international cultural events such as the Biennale, Rupture Arts & Books emerges as a space dedicated to connection, experimentation, and the ongoing dialogue between local identity and global culture.
