Born in St. Petersburg in 1970 and now living in Vienna, Anna Jermolaewa recalls that the Russian state television would broadcast Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet on loop during times of intense political and social unrest. Through videos, photographs, and drawings, the artist critically and ironically addresses the theme of political renewal and regime change, reversing the role of ballet as a tool for distraction and censorship, drawing from her personal experience of migration and opposition to the authoritarian Soviet regime.
