The South Korean Gwangju Biennale of Contemporary Art, the oldest in Asian continent, celebrates its thirtieth anniversary with an exhibition divided into three sections. The first one proposes a complete overview of all the editions of the exhibition, a map of the Metropolitan City of Gwangju, and the screening of the documentary Gwangju Biennale, 30 Years of Perspective. The second section features works by renowned international video artists, while the third one opens the archives of Asia’s longest-running art biennials to the public. Madang, in the title, is the Korean word for “yard”, a symbolic gathering place which becomes the exhibition unit in which the show is divided: 14 madang, one for each of the past editions of the Gwangju Biennale.
