The Fondaco Marcello, a former tobacco warehouse, becomes a stage populated by apparitions – female figures, engine wheels, body parts – showing how our mind works. Through a series of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and reflective surfaces, British artist Rebecca Ackroyd explores abstract ideas such as the fragmentation of reality, the depths of the subconscious, and the malleability of memory, by reflecting at the same time on their representation. The starting point of her work is the Lacanian notion of the Mirror Stage, which describes the fundamental phase of child development where they become aware of the difference between themselves and others.
