Originally designed as material for space missions, thermal blankets are currently used for instance in case of first aid in the aftermath of natural disasters or to provide assistance to migrants after exhausting journeys by sea or land. In the Pavilion, Michelangelo’s Pietà is being wrapped in one of these blankets – a gesture that wants to re-engage with this work of art and to amplify its meanings. At the same time this gesture highlights the fragility of the relationships between individuals who share a horizon of uncertainty and conditions of vulnerability, placing the work in a radical contemporary dimension.
