Venice and Malabon, a fishing village in the Philippines, are both shaped by tides, waterborne trade routes, and ecological vulnerability. Ronald Ventura, one of the most prominent voices in Southeast Asian art, connects them through the symbol of the moon, considered as both a mythological and spiritual element, and creates a series of new works spanning oil painting and charcoal, resin sculpture and Murano glass, as well as video installations.Heterogeneous elements such as photorealism, Renaissance grandeur, and cartoon imagery in dialogue with the classics form a visual pastiche. It’s a way for Ventura to reflect on the complexity and stratification of contemporary identity.
