Painter, theatre director, and set designer, Tadeusz Kantor is one of the key figures of the postwar European avant-garde. The exhibition traces the key milestones of his painting practice – from the informal compositions of the 1950s, to the packagings, to the Next Nothing and Damn It Falls series – putting them in relation to some original objects from his performances. At the heart of the exhibition is the screening of Dead Class, a 1975 recorded theatre performance featuring mannequins of students trapped at their school desks. In parallel, the Starak Collection presents monotypes and costumes by Maria Jarema, co-founder with Kantor of the Cricot Theatre and Cricot 2.
