(2024, Brazil, France, 135')
Brazil, 1971. In a country under the tight grip of military dictatorship, Eunice Paiva’s life, along with that of her five children, changes dramatically following the disappearance of her husband, former Brazilian Labor Party deputy Rubens Paiva. Adapted from the memoir of the same name by writer and journalist Marcelo Rubens Paiva, the film tells the story of a woman the director knew personally, revealing, through the pain of a loss, the still open wound of a nation.
Brazilian director Walter Salles won the Golden Bear at Berlin for Best Film and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film with Central Station (1998), and received an Oscar for Best Original Song and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film with The Motorcycle Diaries (2004). At Venice 58, he presented April Desperation (2001) in competition. In 2005, he made his Hollywood debut with Dark Water, an adaptation of the Japanese horror film of the same name from 2002. In 2012, he directed On the Road, based on Jack Kerouac’s novel, followed by A Guy from Fenyang (2014) with Jia Zhang-Ke and The Man in the Rockefeller Suit (2018) with Benedict Cumberbatch.
