Born in Russia and raised in Georgia, Georgian director and screenwriter Dea Kulumbegashvili studied at Columbia University in New York. In 2014, she made her debut at the Cannes Film Festival with the short film Ukhilavi Sivrtseebi, which deals with family themes. Her first feature film, Naked Sky, later retitled Beginning (2020), was supported by the International Film Festival Rotterdam and received a residency at the Cannes Film Festival, along with other awards from the Sofia and Sarajevo Film Festivals.
