In Brooklin, Maine, Lorentzen spent four seasons among the craftspeople of the Brooklin Boat Yard, where around sixty master shipwrights were at work building a 56-foot sailboat. True to his devotion to observation, the director lets the gestures, rhythms, and silences of the shipyard tell the story, offering a portrait of an increasingly rare American working class that – for now – resists the haste of everything else.
Co-founder, along with Kellin Quinn, of the independent production company Hedgehog Films, Luke Lorentzen (Connecticut, 1993) made his feature debut with New York Cuts (2015). His follow-up Midnight Family (2019), awarded at Sundance and over 35 other festivals, was adapted in 2024 into a fictional TV series for Apple TV+. He also directed and served as cinematographer on Last Chance U (Netflix, 2016; Emmy Award recipient). His documentary A Still Small Voice (2023) won the Directing Award for US Documentary at Sundance.
