After turning down the chance to direct The Exorcist, the acclaimed 1973 horror by William Friedkin, John Boorman would, surprisingly, agree a few years later to take on an ambitious, big-budget sequel: Exorcist II: The Heretic. Kittredge’s documentary recounts the film’s troubled production, plagued from the pre-production stage by copyright disputes and numerous other setbacks. The result was a visually striking work that would nevertheless be rejected by audiences; its disappointing box office barely managed to cover production costs.
