(2024, South Africa, 89')
Young Carissa lives with her grandmother, Wilhelmiena, in a small village in the Cederberg Mountains of South Africa. Seeing her spend her days on her phone, completely inactive, Wilhelmiena urges her granddaughter to apply for a job at a new golf club under construction in the mountains. However, when Carissa discovers that the resort will be built on her long-absent grandfather’s rooibos tea plantations, she faces a difficult choice: accept the job or join her grandfather in trying to reclaim the land. The main roles being played by locals, and the close collaboration with the Wupperthal community, along with on-location shooting, gives Jacobs and Delmar’s debut film a semi-documentary aesthetic.
Co-screenwriters and co-directors of numerous film, theater, animation, and TV projects, Jason Jacobs and Devon Delmar present their debut feature film at the Venice Film Festival. In 2023, the film was part of the Final Cut in Venice program.
In search of the truth, we allowed the action to unfold in front of the camera, letting the environment tell us what story to tell.
