Douglas had a difficult childhood. He wanted affection, but received abuse instead. He feels dejected, which made him create a world of his own to find refuge in, a world that has no place for the people who mistreat him. At the center of his universe are his dogs, which Douglas loves sincerely, disinterestedly, and mutually. The threats of the outside world, though, are still there.
