The series retraces the extraordinary inner journey of Dutch Jewish writer Etty Hillesum between 1941 and 1943, depicting her profound spiritual awakening through the pages of her diary. Set in Amsterdam under Nazi occupation, the series also tells how Etty had several opportunities to save herself but chose to share the fate of her people, guided by her deep human and religious convictions. She died shortly after arriving at Auschwitz, as did her parents and one of her two brothers.
Director, screenwriter, television producer, and critic Hagai Levi is the creator of the acclaimed TV series Be’Tipul, which was adapted into In Treatment, starring Gabriel Byrne and produced by, among others, Mark Wahlberg. He previously appeared at Venice in 2021 with Scenes from a Marriage, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, a remake of the 1973 Swedish miniseries directed by Ingmar Bergman.
