He is universally recognized for his black-and-white photographs: an undisputed master and great storyteller, the first Italian photographer to join Magnum. His long artistic journey spans multiple themes—current events, war, travel, religion—and diverse visual registers—reportage, fashion, art, advertising—seamlessly blended in a balance between artifice and authenticity, in a constant quest to give form to chaos. With passion, humor, and irony, the documentary brings to life fragments of his world and reflections on the meaning of images.
Born in Palermo in 1959, the director and writer made his debut with Il manoscritto del principe (2000). He won the prestigious Campiello Opera Prima Prize with his first novel Il trono vuoto (2012), later adapted into the film Viva la libertà (2013), which received two David di Donatello Awards for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. His subsequent works include Le confessioni (2016), Una storia senza nome (2018) and Il bambino nascosto (2021), both presented Out of Competition at the Venice Film Festival, and La stranezza (2022), starring Toni Servillo and Ficarra & Picone, a major critical and box office success.
