Taipei, 1988. Introverted teenager Hsiao-lee grows up in a joyless, silent household. Meeting the lively and carefree Li-li awakens a long-dormant desire for freedom. But her mother’s past resurfaces, mirroring her own confusion. Torn between loyalty to an inherited fate and the possibility of choosing her own path, Hsiao-lee confronts the cracks in a generational story of frustration and regret. With Nühai, Shu Qi makes a lucid and intimate directorial debut, written over ten years and realized shortly after serving on the Venice jury. A female-driven narrative spanning generations, where mothers, daughters, and wives each seek their own escape from the invisible cages of family and society.
One of Asia’s most acclaimed actresses, Shu Qi began her career in the 1990s and has worked with directors like Hou Hsiao-Hsien (Millennium Mambo, Three Times, The Assassin), Stephen Chow, and Jiang Wen. She has won three Hong Kong Film Awards and two Golden Horse Awards for Best Actress, and served on juries in Berlin (2008), Cannes (2009), and Venice (2023).
