(2023, Germania, USA, 89')
On August 31, 2021, twenty years after 9/11 and following an agreement signed by President Trump, American troops left Kabul and Afghanistan for good. This documentary by Egyptian director Ibrahim Nash’at shows images of a country that fell back into extremism and obscurantism. Exclusive, impressive footage denounce human rights abuse and in particular repression against women, showing how serious the situation is in closed circles, far removed from the eyes of society and the media.
Born in 1990, Egyptian documentarian Ibrahim Nash’at studied at the DocLab of the Doha Film Institute and at the Met Film School in Berlin. A freelance director, Nash’at works with broadcasters DW TV, AJ+, and Business Insider by making TV programmes, documentaries, and video investigative reports. In 2018, he directed his first feature film, A Moment with the Wind, a celebration of kitesurfing. One of the most delicate entries at the Venice Film Festival, Hollywoodgate is a testimony of the brutal reality of Kabul after the West checked out.
