Julian Schnabel (New York, 1951) is a painter, director, and screenwriter, and a prominent figure in contemporary American art. After debuting with Basquiat (1996) at the Venice Film Festival, he directed acclaimed films like Before Night Falls (2000), awarded at Venice, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), winner at Cannes and Oscar-nominated. He regularly returns to Venice with works like Lou Reed’s Berlin (2007), Miral (2010), and At Eternity’s Gate (2018), which earned Willem Dafoe the Volpi Cup. In the Hand of Dante, based on Nick Tosches’ cult novel and shot largely in Italy, features a top-tier cast including Al Pacino.
