On Mexico’s Pacific coast, in the places chosen by Ina Marija before her untimely death, her father Sharunas and her sister Una retrace her steps. Among mangroves scarred by hurricanes yet always able to regenerate, father and daughter confront grief with delicacy, finding in the natural landscape a form of continuity and renewal. With Lagūna, Sharunas Bartas transforms a personal experience into a work that intertwines memory and life, sorrow and rebirth. Born in Šiauliai in 1964 and trained at VGIK in Moscow, Bartas is among the most important filmmakers in contemporary European cinema. Founder of the independent studio Studija Kinema, he has created a poetic and rigorous cinematic universe with films such as Trys dienos, Koridorius and Few of Us, later followed by Peace to Us in Our Dreams and now by Lagūna. His works have been presented at major international festivals, from Cannes to Rotterdam, and have received retrospectives at institutions such as the Centre Pompidou.
