Spain, ancestral traditions, social conventions, religion, hyper-masculinity, and homosexuality. These are the elements intertwined in Matador, creating a melodramatic thriller with intense tones, ironic and brilliant in its extreme characterizations, yet at the same time almost Hitchcockian. Everything revolves around the life of a famous bullfighter, Diego Montes, forced into early retirement after being gored – a life balancing power and impotence, blood and the arena, where the pursuit of violent death becomes both perversion and the ultimate act of freedom.
