Frederick Wiseman

American filmmaker Frederick Wiseman was born in Boston in 1930. An award-winning documentarist, his career touches different genres. He is known for Titicut Follies (1967), Near Death (1989), La Comédie Française ou L’amour joué (1996), La danse-Le ballet de l’Opéra de Paris (2009), At Berkeley (2013) e National Gallery (2014). Wiseman earned four Emmys, an Academy Honorary Award in 2017, and a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2014. He would be back at the VFF in 2022 with Un couple, presented in the main competition. The filmmaker dedicates most of his work to editing, while he maintains a barely visible presence during principal photography. It is in editing that he determines the structure and narrative of his films. While not eminently political, his work has often questioned the American System, highlighting its fragilities.
