In the twilight of Ceaușescu’s regime in Romania, eight-year-old Maria is the sole witness to the mysterious disappearance of her older sister. While the adults retreat into silence, it is she who sets out in search of the truth, guided by the strength of friendship and the power of imagination. A coming-of-age tale tinged with the fantastic, where individual memory and collective trauma intertwine to become an allegory of the brutal transition from communist dictatorship to the fragile hope of a new world.
A Philosophy graduate from the University of Bucharest, Mihai Mincan (Bucharest, 1980) began his career in journalism, collaborating with some of Romania’s leading newspapers. Inspired by real events but always filtered through a personal and original perspective, he has written and directed short films, animated works, and television documentaries presented at numerous festivals in Romania and across Europe. To the North, his feature debut, was selected for the Orizzonti competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2022.
