Set in Calcutta in 1948, Mother follows seven decisive days in the life of Mother Teresa (Noomi Rapace) before founding the Missionaries of Charity. When she receives Vatican permission to leave the St. Mary’s convent to start her own community, she is confronted with an unexpected moral crisis: the nun she has chosen as her successor, Agnieszka (Sylvia Hoeks), confides that she is pregnant and wishes to have an abortion. Mother Teresa is thus forced to face doubts, faith, and personal desires, while famine rages outside and, within the convent walls, existential questions arise about her true role and vocation.
Teona Strugar Mitevska (Skopje, 1974) graduated in graphic design and studied film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She made her feature debut with Kako ubiv svetec (2004, Rotterdam) and gained international recognition with I Am From Titov Veles (2008, Berlinale). Her most acclaimed works include God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunya (LUX Prize 2019, Berlinale) and The Happiest Man in the World (Orizzonti 2022). Mother marks her English-language debut.
