“Cinema in its purest form, caught between light and dark, in which political urgency is transfigured into a hypnotic experience”: this is how Beatrice Fiorentino, curator of SIC, describes Waking Hours, the only documentary in this year’s Critcs’ Week competition. The concept of borders is explored immersively, at key points along the Balkan route, through a play of nocturnal shadows where darkness becomes an allegory of uncertainty. The film is signed by duo Federico Cammarata and Filippo Foscarini: the former handles image and photography, the latter sound. The result is a fieldwork piece, intense and radically personal.
