In the first chapter, Fausto, a cultured yet action-inhibited man, had returned to Bobbio following his mother’s death. In his interactions with the townspeople, he had been unable to restrain himself from expressing his inappropriate opinions candidly. In this second chapter, set three years later, he has never left Bobbio and now lives in his mother’s house, overwhelmed by books. He has aged and fallen into poverty, does not work or have a pension, and must sell the house.
Marco Bellocchio (Bobbio, 1939) received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice in 2012, where he has frequently presented his films, including Buongiorno, notte in 2003, Sorelle Mai in 2010, and Bella Addormentata two years later. His auteur vision has been one of the most discerning in Italy since the 1960s, earning him five David di Donatello awards and numerous appearances at the Cannes Film Festival.
