In Fidel Devkota’s thriller, which explores the consequences of foreign occupation on Nepalese society, a truck driver must face a series of trials and unexpected obstacles due to the cargo he is transporting. In the director’s words, «the film reflects the spirit of the youth in Nepal today, who live in growing political and economic uncertainty. Although it is a fictional film, the threads of the narrative are based on events that may be hard to believe, but are related as true in fables, myths, and allegories of the region».
Sri Lanka native Fidel Devkota is an established director and screenwriter. He worked for several Nepali- and English-language projects. In his earlier works, such as Wind of Change in Lo Mustang (2016) and Kangling (2019), Devkota shows his take on climate change and its nefarious consequences on Nepal and its population. The Red Suitcase is the first film participating in the Venice Film Festival that has been entirely made and produced in Nepal by a local crew.
