Cai Shangjun (Beijing, 1967) is a Chinese director and screenwriter, part of the so-called “Sixth Generation” of Chinese cinema. A graduate of the Central Academy of Drama, he began as a screenwriter collaborating with Zhang Yang (Spicy Love Soup, Shower, Sunflower). In 2007, he made his directorial debut with his award-winning The Red Awn. His masterpiece is People Mountain People Sea (2011), which earned him the Silver Lion for Best Director in Venice.
