Kasia makes a living burgling other people’s homes. When she breaks into the apartment of a recently deceased man, she decides to stay – first out of curiosity, then to the point of posing as his partner. Piece by piece, as she reconstructs an identity that isn’t hers, she comes to realize how different her own life could have been, and just how difficult it now is to step back. A story of contemporary loneliness, of a lie that for once seems to do some good, and of a bond forged without any right that becomes, against all odds, essential.
Among the promising new voices of Polish cinema, Dębowski (born in Warsaw, 1987) graduated in directing from the Łódź Film School and went on to work as an assistant director to Paweł Pawlikowski, Leszek Dawid, Martha Coolidge, and Gary Romolo Fiorella. He has directed several short films, including 35.8 (2010) and eNDuRance (2016), as well as the television series Na patrolu and Barwy szczęścia. In 2023, he released his debut feature, Tyle co nic, which swept numerous domestic awards. What Belongs to Others is his second feature film.
