FESTA DELLA SALUTE 2026

In Venice, the celebration of the Madonna della Salute has marked the city’s calendar for nearly four centuries. The festival commemorates the miracle that, according to tradition, saved Venice from the devastating plague of 1630–31, and it still draws crowds of Venetians from both the islands and the mainland to venerate the Byzantine icon of the Mesopanditissa.
The heart of the celebration is the Basilica della Salute, an imposing Baroque building reached via a scenic staircase that seems to rise from the waters of the Grand Canal. Construction began in 1631, and the church was consecrated in 1687. Inside, it houses the sacred image of the Black Madonna, surrounded by an elaborate array of statues and artworks dedicated to the glorification of Mary. The basilica’s twin domes, the larger inspired by the crown of the Rosary, dominate the skyline, while the facade and interior sculptures and reliefs narrate the anticipation of the Messiah and the stories of the prophets.
The popular ritual is simple yet profound: worshippers cross the floating bridge over the Giudecca Canal to reach the basilica, purchase candles from surrounding stalls, and hand them to volunteers at the entrance, who light them and place them on the altars, illuminating the church in a collective gesture of faith and devotion. The union of sacred and secular is also expressed through local culinary traditions: crunchy street sweets, hot chocolate with whipped cream, fritters, and the traditional castradina – smoked mutton – are essential stops on a day that remains etched in the hearts of Venetians.
Despite the city’s international fame, the festival retains its authentic Venetian character: a moment when the community comes together, transcending social divisions, to celebrate its history and identity. The Feast of the Madonna della Salute remains a living metaphor of salvation and resilience, a true symbol of a city that faces fragility and challenges without ever losing its beauty or spirit.
