Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka’s work is a complex interweaving of printing techniques, paperworking, natural dyeing and stitching, resulting in often large-scale installations and wearable sculptures. Her works are the embodiment of extensive processes and collaborations, but also of intimate and profound dimensions: on the one hand, her work with Arctic communities and collaborative performance practices, on the other, aspects of personal experience such as bipolarity and queer identity. The technical sophistication of her work intertwines themes of mental health, climate change and survival.
