Beatriz Milhazes’s work offers a lively explosion of colour and freedom. Renowned for her painterly style, collage and printmaking, she first found inspiration in her native Rio de Janeiro, using colours and geometries inspired in particular by the botanical gardens and the Tijuca Forest, an approach which culminated in her “chromatic free geometry”. In the 80s she was a figurehead of the Generation 80 movement whose return to painting would bring renewed freedom to the creative process, influenced by European Modernism, Baroque and anthropophagia.
