The son of Italian immigrants, Portinari began his artistic career in his early youth. In 1928 he won the gold medal at the ENBA Salon with a painting in a very academic style, and obtained the opportunity to travel to Europe. His career continued successfully until 1962, when he died from lead poisoning. One of his main works is the monumental painting “War and Peace”, permanently exhibited at the United Nations Building in New York
