An artist whose value has been recognized only in her maturity, Carol Rama suffered personally and in solitude, which shows a style imbued with tension and disquiet, though also a certain sincerity and cheer. From her first works in watercolour to later pieces where she played with the material significance of objects, Rama played with abstract art and figuration, using sensuality as a recurring theme emerging in obvious ways, unprejudiced and naïve. In 2003 she was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 50th Venice Art Biennale.
