CHANG WOOSOUNG

1912, Chungju-si, South Korea
2005, Seoul, South Korea

Born and raised in a period when Korea was under Japanese rule, Chang Woosoung was initially forced to adapt to the then prevalent genre known as Japanese painting. He later devoted himself to finding his own style, studying ancient Chinese paintings and the calligraphy of the Korean Chos?n dynasty. Landscapes and cranes are the main themes of his work, in which the negative space created by the precise arrangement of shapes is of great importance in conveying balance and harmony.
