DIEGO RIVERA

1886, Guanajuato City, Mexico
1957, Mexico City, Mexico

Without doubt the leading figure in Mexican mural art. In his work, art and politics coincide, and his imposing murals, characterized by simple, easily-understood realism, have powerful social value: from tools for expression they become acts of protest and political critique. Rivera became the spokesperson for a people who were demanding civil rights and social justice. In his works he addressed the most important themes of communist ideology.
