Doreen Sibanda was born in the UK and got her education there, facing the challenge of being a black woman in a white-majority society. The need to understand the experience of black people both in Africa and as part of the diaspora shaped her artistic and philosophical vision. The artist started working for the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 1981 as Educational Officer. In 2004, she was appointed Executive Director of the Museum, and worked in this capacity a further sixteen years, while also curating Zimbabwe’s National Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale. An artist, curator, author, and manager, Sibanda founded several enterprises and projects on art and nature.
