A performance artist and queer activist, Elyla (aka Fredman Barahona) critically explores the male lineage of the Sandinista revolution, narratives of national identity, and their own experience of being of mestizo/indigenous origins in a religious and conservative society. In 2013 Elyla co-founded Operación Queer, a collective that blurs the lines between art and activism, taking a stand against the persecution of sexual dissidence by Daniel Ortega’s repressive government.
