FRANCIS NEWTON SOUZA

1924, Saligao, India
2002, Mumbai, India

A free spirit with a rebellious nature since childhood, after India’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947 he contributed significantly to a “new art for a new free India”. His paintings include still lifes, landscapes, nudes and Christian icons, and one of the most frequently recurring themes is that of conflicts in the relationships between men and women, the figures that bring his paintings to life deliberately distorted and revealing an uninhibited and realistic style.
