“I believe that since the beginning of my career and beyond, my inspiration has been my personal reaction to society.” As an Egyptian woman, she saw two kings, seven presidents, four wars and three revolutions but unlike her European contemporaries, she was as much at the forefront of the artistic scene as her male counterparts. As a member of the Contemporary Art Group (1946), she dedicated herself to the search for an “Egyptian identity,” promoting modernization and social reform and collective freedom through art.
