Using personal realism, Grace Salome Kwami restored identity to men, women and scenes of daily life in Ghana at the dawn of Independence through small and large scale clay sculptures, engravings, charcoal portraits, ink and tempera with the warm colours typical of natural pigments, helping trace the foundations of Modernism in West Africa, where she also played the role of pioneer with regards to fabric design.
