HUGUETTE CALAND

1931, Beirut, Lebanon
2019, Beirut, Lebanon

Born in a prominent Lebanese family, Caland spent the first part of her life in her native country to later move to Paris, where she enjoyed a freedom and an atmosphere that she just couldn’t in Lebanon. It is at that time that she chose art, an art that has been all about bodies, sensuality, about the exploration of physicality and the abundance of flesh. It took years for her drawings, so innovative and so inflammatory, to be mainstreamed.
