From an upper-class Cairo family, trained in first Expressionist then Surrealist art by El-Telmissany (one of the founders of the Egyptian avant-garde group Art et Liberté), she soon became interested in political issues such as social justice and women’s rights, even spending time in prison and becoming one of Egypt’s most important feminists, a pioneer of modern art who was present at the 1952 Art Biennale.
