IONE SALDANHA

1919, Alegrete, Brazil
2001,Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A pioneering but often overlooked figure in 20th-century Brazilian art. While working intuitively, Saldanha developed a rigorous and coherent oeuvre, moving from figurative paintings to three-dimensional abstract works. She used a variety of media and techniques, with extraordinary attention to the colour and consistency of the paint she used. Her artistic practice focused on exploring the boundaries between painting and sculpture, with particular attention to geometry and the representation of the city.
