JOSÉ SABOGAL

1888, Cajabamba, Peru
1956, Lima, Peru

Of Spanish ancestry, Sabogal took to heart the aesthetical history of native Peruvians and effectively adapted the new, modern, direct art trends to the need for positive native representation. After taking art classes in Europe and in Argentina, the artist travelled back to Peru, where he committed to the establishment of an art circuit and the opening of a stable museum. He is remembered as the father of Peruvian Indigenism.
