The only female member of Grupo Espartaco (1959-1968), a revolutionary artistic movement that rejected cultural colonialism, Juana Elena Diz produced works that focused on the solitude and strength of indigenous women. A painter and muralist, preferring earth tones with occasional and sudden explosions of color, Diz portrays female figures with bold, mysterious and powerful shapes which seem to hide an enigma, just like the artist herself, who simply vanished into thin air. What remains of her is her work and the message of solidarity and social justice intrinsic to her art.
