A painter and printmaker who was a pioneer of the 1950s Brazilian modernist movement, a key figure in the development of the Concrete movement, and the only woman to be part of the avant-garde collective Grupo Ruptura. Her rigorous modus operandi was characterized by form, space, colour and rhythm, and her work often makes use of materials which were unconventional for the time, such as embroidery, woodcuts and tapestries
