KALOKI NYAMAI

By layering different materials – foam rubber, agave fibres, pigments – through a variety of assembly techniques including braiding, gluing and sewing, Kaloki Nyamai constructs complex narratives open to multiple interpretations. He also incorporates precolonial iconography into his work, offering devices for exploration and reflection and for healing the wounds of history. His works reach monumental proportions, occupying space as a challenge to the hegemony of dominant narratives, which are often biased towards the hegemonic values of the West.
