MAHMOUD SABRI

1927, Baghdad, Iraq
2012, Maidenhead, UK

Mahmoud Sabri researched aesthetic synthesis between the art languages of modern Europe and the modernizing movements of Arab states, which in the 1950s chiefly took nationalist form, including and promoting doubt on the role that colonial or ex-colonial powers should have in their cultural development. Influenced by Cubism and Expressionism, Sabri maintained the importance of drawing from life, an essential component of his idea of national representation.
