MAHMOUD SAÏD

1897, Alexandria, Egypt
1964, Alexandria, Egypt

Considered the founder of modern Egyptian painting, he was a sophisticated representative of the elite (his niece would become Queen Farida). He abandoned the profession of judge for art based in the culture of his homeland, created with a mastery of technique learned from Italian and French masters: landscapes, whirling dervishes, portraits of Egyptian notables, nudes of sensual women.
