MALANGATANA VALENTE NGWENYA

1936, Matalana, Mozambique
2011, Matosinhos, Portugal

Unesco Artist for Peace in 1997, his multidisciplinary activity – poetry, music, figurative arts, heritage conservation – coincides with the battles undertaken in defense of political and expressive freedom in Mozambique. His work is dedicated to reconstructing the identity-based universe of ancestral culture, where vital spiritual forces, human, animal and plant, re-emerge in an intense, crowded narrative continuum, the expression of a rebellion against the imposed order, homologation and the violence of the colonial regime and the subsequent wars of colonial liberation.
